AFC
(Aired 2 August 2006)

I did not want to make a speech at the launch of the PNC's election campaign Sunday night for of two reasons 1. I had signed the media code and as a political commentator I should not be giving public speeches on the list of a political party, so earlier in the day at Congress Place I made it known that I prefer to find out what the code said about being a media commentator and how that conflicts with me making public speeches at a political rally and 2. I have not explained to this nation why exactly I was on that stage with the PNCR and not on the one that collapsed two days before.

In 1997 the PNC decided to change its image by creating a reform arm for itself, but unfortunately those who formed the reform did not have the public support and popularity to truly reform the PNC.

This time, the party entered this election with persons such as myself on a PNCR one Guyana platform, believe it or not I became a member of this PNCR Guyana 1 platform exactly 24 hours before my name was submitted at Town Hall, so those who will tell you that I have become a PNCR member is distorting the truth not that there is anything wrong with being a PNCR member, I want that to be clearly understood, but Rupert Roopernarine and Stanley Ming had asked me months ago to join this platform with them, but I told them that I could not since I was committed to the AFC, in fact I was its chief scrutineer.

This now brings me to the AFC and its supporters who want to know why I am no longer with them and why they only discovered that I was no longer with them on nomination day when they heard that I was with the Guyana one component of the PNCR.

I made no public announcement on leaving the AFC, because I did not want to hurt the public's perception of them, since they were still part of my vision of a third force and I decided that I would wait out this election as a political commentator and continue to force the popularity of the PPP below 42% which I flatter myself that I have been partially instrumental in bringing down from over 50%, and I continued to give the AFC the free airtime every week to put their plans to the public, notwithstanding that I was no longer associated with them, but I continued to hope that they would see the wisdom of joining with Hardy, Dev and the others to create a really powerful third force, but their egos kept getting in the way.

I joined the AFC since I believed that a third force was the key to removing race from Guyana's politics and I saw everyone who were not PNC or PPP as potential members of this third force, this was not a time for personal aggrandisement, this was a time for working together for the Guyana we all love so much. And the AFC passed up numerous opportunities to join with Ravi Dev, Paul Hardy, Joey Jagan and the other smaller parties and were actually guilty of frustrating the process of collating with these smaller parties which in the long run I predict will hamper the process of opposition politics in this country in the post 2006 election period, since as powerful as the AFC think that they are, they would have been stronger with the other groups than on its own. There were other issues but I will not go into those, you have to trust my judgement ladies and gentlemen, there is only one enemy right now, one party which I have decided has lost the moral integrity to rule me and it is they that I will carry the fight to.

This brings me back to the PNCR 1 Guyana, every one knows me, they know that I cannot be dominated into submission by anyone and if Mr. Corbin wanted another rubber stamp he would not have asked me to stand on the stage with him on Sunday night, I know that he knows me well enough to realise that. So this time Robert Corbin wants change, he understands that no one nationality or violence can ever establish him as president in this nation, so he is willing to compromise to make the concessions and alliances necessary to get a one Guyana force which is representative of all the people.

So this time the PNC will honour its commitment to reform itself, and the reason why it will do that, is because it has no choice but to reform itself for its own survival; it must do so, or it will leave its supporters in subjugation by the PPP forever. As for me being left in subjugation by the PPP forever is unacceptable. And I am saying this again for the benefit of my Indo Guyanese brothers who are being told that I do not like Indo Guyanese because I criticise the PPP, those who tell you so are liars. But that is not my fault, it is your fault since those who think this way have been brainwashed into thinking that if I am against the PPP then I must be against Indians since that is how the PPP want you to think, so you should examine their motives. And I want to say again that this is not the PPP of Cheddie Jagan, the man was ideologically challenged, but he loved his country and he was a simple, truthful and honest man and he must be very sad wherever he is at what he sees his party doing to this country today to fill their pockets.

So I stand with the one Guyana PNCR slate and whatever little political currency I have will go there with me. I apologise to anyone who may have been misled by my silent departure from the AFC, but I did it because this country has enough confusion on its political landscape and I felt that another controversy would not be helpful.

I have now decided that until the elections are over I will keep my obligations to the media code, I will remove my commentaries from the Evening News, they will be played sometime after the news but not in the news. That should leave me free to campaign for Guyana's future with the PNCR 1Guyana, since I truly believe that this is a fight for the very future of this nation.

And notwithstanding that Robert Corbin said it at least 10 times on Sunday 30th July 2006, at the congress and at the rally, I want to say that I will not stand with any party that takes to the streets, The list of grievances perpetrated against the PNCR and its supporters is long and your cause is just, it is understandable that you should be angry, as I am angry.

But the PNCR's former leader Desmond Hoyte used to invoke these words which are written in the holy bible at Matthew 10:16 Lo, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves, be ye therefore as wise as the serpents, and gentle as the doves.

Since becoming your leader Robert Corbin has refused to march and that was wise, since even though you may perceive that it is your only tool, you must understand that every time you take to the streets the PPP wins. And we must not give the PPP ammunition to use against us. To be wise, we now need new weapons, these weapons are going to be heavy to lift but you will have to lift them or you will not succeed.

To empower yourselves you will have to empower your party and its leaders because their power is your power. You will have to make sure that you are registered to vote, you must watch the lists in each of your areas and see if those who are on the list are here living in Guyana and if not you will point out these names to the scrutineers so that they can pay special attention to those names on polling day.

Since the PPP has systematically deprived you of the economic power to do this for money, you must do it for justice and to empower yourselves, so give your time freely, the sacrifice of a few days now, is nothing compared to a further 5 years of subjugation.

You will have to make time to cast your ballot on voting day, everybody who can vote must vote, since if the status quo that exist now stands the PPP only has the support of  42 per cent of you, so we can win, if not the government itself, we can win control of the parliament. There must be no confusion about it, winning control of parliament can make a lot of difference to your lives, I promise you that.

And most importantly you will have to make the sacrifices necessary to man the places of poll to make sure that any shenanigans attempted by the PPP and GECOM do not pass unnoticed on the 28th August 2006, everything depends on that. Your Indo Guyanese brothers are not your enemy, the PPP is the enemy of all of us whatever race you are, even Indo Guyanese, so it is up to you to reach out to them, they have been taught to be fearful of you, so you have to reassure them that you are not to be feared.

Finally there is the rule of law, suddenly we have some redress and any transgression can now be taken to the CCJ, so even though it will take time, we will get justice! So be patient, be wise, and we will prevail.

now almost everyone has this perception that you have to have an hour a week to deliver an effective message nothing can be further from the truth, look at what me and Kit Nacsomento have done with one or two commentaries per week most of my commentaries are around 9 minutes Kit's were even less you don't need more time than that, in 9 minutes a week I am destroying the PPP who is using NCN TV and Gina as propaganda tools 24 hours a day.

To win this battle that has been forced on us after 14 years of lies, betrayal and subterfuge, we will have to start by asking ourselves a few questions

Did the PPP try to subjugate anyone who was not PPP by making them poor so that they cannot efficiently mobilise against them in an election?

Is that why all of the best jobs were given to friends of freedom house?

Is that why anyone who were supporters of this PNC were systematically victimised, marginalised and pauperised?

Is that why they made agreements with you and did not keep their word?

Is that why all the government contracts were given to PPP supporters and not to you?

Is that why they have deprived you of having a say in how they ran this country for fourteen years?

Is that why they did not let one PNC member sit on the board that awards contracts in this country?

Is that why they did not form the constitutionally required procurement commission which would have given the PNC a chance to empower its supporters by getting them contracts in proportion to their numbers, to provide goods, services and contracts in this nation?

Is that why they have denied your leaders the legal right to tell you their views on the state owned media including the Chronicle, GTV and GBC which is now called NCN?

This list is long comrades and there will have to be an accounting if not this time then the next time but I stand here tonight and I tell you that there will be an accounting!

The list of grievances perpetrated against you is long and it is just that you should be angry as I am angry.

But as your former leader Desmond Hoyte used to say words which are written in the holy bible at Matthew 10:16 Lo, I do send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves, be ye therefore as wise as the serpents, and simple as the doves.

Since becoming your leader Robert Corbin refused to March that was wise, since even though you perceive that this is your only tool, every time you take it up the PPP wins. And we will not give the PPP ammunition to use against us.

To be wise, we now need new weapons, these weapons are going to be heavy to lift but you will have to lift them or you will not succeed.

To empower yourselves you will have to empower your party and its leaders because their power is your power. You will have to make sure that you are registered to vote, you will watch the lists in each of your areas and you will decide if those who are on the list are here living in Guyana and you will point out these names to the scrutineers so that they can pay special attention to those names on polling day since the PPP has systematically deprived you of the economic power to do this for money you must do it for justice and to empower yourselves..

You will have to make time to cast your ballot on voting day, everybody who can vote will vote since if the status quo that exists now remains with the PPP at 42 per cent we will be empowered by denying the PPP control of the Parliament.

And most importantly you will have to make sacrifices to man the places of poll to make sure that any shenanigans attempted by the PPP and GECOM do not pass unnoticed. In this you are lucky since right now the most important man in the PNC is Joe Hamilton and he is by far the best person for chief scrutineer in this country, and I don't care which party we are talking about.

Those among you who are legally trained will give their time to force the legal system to function in our interest, we are not going to march in Regent street we are going to march to the courts and we are going to demand justice even if it takes ten years and even if we end up in the Caribbean Court of Justice. We never had a weapon like this before and we will use it!

If you are going to give your time to do the work of the foot soldiers then the Majors, Colonels and Generals will have to do their part. They will have to use their position in Parliament and in the legal profession to force the PPP to respect your rights and even if we do not win the presidency, we will control that parliament, since in every poll we have seen the PPP can only muster 42% of the votes and believe me if 51 percent of the parliament says that they have no confidence in the president he will have to resign, so my advise to Jagdeo is to buy a cushion, because to get what he wants including his budget, he is going to have to come to that parliament and get down on his knees and beg for it.

Finally you have to promise me, that is, you have to promise me personally it is the price I beg you to pay to have me with you, you have to promise me, your leaders and others in this nation that there will be peace in Guyana, that you will try to live with your indo Guyanese brothers in peace, help them to understand that you are being deliberately deprived of your patrimony, that your cause is just, and that the result will not be peaceful if it continues like this, you will not do this because you are weak, you will do this because they are your fellow Guyanese, your brothers, and because this is the new PNC which is as wise as the serpent and as simple as the dove.

So my fellow Guyanese are you ready to lift these new weapons!

Are you ready to lift these new weapons?
